A Litter-Robot With Three Cats: Why We Bought One, and What We Are Still Figuring Out

The short answer: if scooping every day is hard for anyone in your house, a Litter-Robot is worth the money. Ours is a Litter-Robot 5, all three cats used it from the first day, and the litter gets handled even when we are not home. It is not perfect. It lets out a smell each time it cycles, and the litter we use in it is dusty enough to see. We fixed the first problem and are still working on the second.

Why we bought it

My husband Roland has chronic health issues and a low immune system. Scooping every day is not something he should be doing, and it is not something that should depend on me being home. We needed the litter handled whether I was here or away. That is the whole reason.

We bought it in April 2026 and set it up in late May.

How the cats took to it

Better than we expected. All three used it right away, with no coaxing, no hiding from it and no accidents outside the box.

How it works, in plain terms

After a cat leaves, the Litter-Robot waits a few minutes, then slowly turns its globe. Clean litter is sifted back into place and the clumps drop into a drawer underneath with a carbon filter. Whisker says the drawer can go about 10 days between emptying with one cat, so less with three. It takes cats from 3 to 30 pounds, up to five cats. It weighs each cat on every visit, and the app tells you who used it and when, which is useful for spotting a change in a cat’s habits early.

The smell we did not expect, and what fixed it

Every time it cycles, the opening to the waste drawer is exposed for a moment, and you can smell it. It is brief, but it is there.

Our answer was to put one of our two air purifiers right next to it. We run it on Auto, and the moment a cat has used the box, its air quality light turns red and the fan picks up. More on that purifier, and why we chose one with a carbon filter, on our Picks page.

The litter question

A Litter-Robot needs clumping litter. Whisker recommends a standard-weight, clay-based clumping litter. Our bundle came with a 20 lb bag of Whisker’s own GreatLitter, and we started with that. Now we use Fresh Step Multi-Cat unscented clumping litter. We stay with unscented for the same reason as in our other box: scented litter set off sneezing in our house.

It is a little dusty, enough that you can see it. We are still deciding whether to test others. If we change, we will say so here.

We still keep a regular box

A stainless steel litter box sits in the same room. We would rather have a second option than depend on one machine, and a steel box has nothing to break. We learned that the hard way with a smart water fountain.

Upkeep

We bought Whisker’s Litter-Robot 5 HSA/FSA Bundle, which came with 25 waste drawer liners, the LitterTrap mat, a 20 lb bag of GreatLitter and a 6-pack of carbon filters, so we had what we needed from the first day.

For a deep clean, the globe comes out. We wash it with a hose outside and let it dry in the sun before it goes back in.

With three cats, we empty the drawer every other day.

What it costs, and ways to pay

Whisker lists the Litter-Robot 5 from $799. Our HSA/FSA bundle was $882 before tax.

HSA or FSA funds. Whisker works with a company called Flex so the Litter-Robot can be paid for with HSA or FSA money. That needs a Letter of Medical Necessity, and Whisker covers the fee for it. Whisker lists conditions that can qualify, including chronic pain, limited mobility, pregnancy, and respiratory or neurological conditions that make litter care difficult or unsafe. Approval is not automatic. Whether it also counts as a medical expense on your taxes depends on your own situation, so ask a tax professional before you count on it.

Paying over time. Whisker offers Affirm, which splits the cost into 3, 6, 12 or 18 monthly payments, “as low as $44 per month” by Whisker’s example. The interest rate runs from 0% to 36% depending on your credit, and 0% applies only to products in Whisker’s pay-over-time range. Checking your rate is a soft credit check, but late payments can affect your credit. Whisker also takes major cards, Shop Pay, PayPal and Amazon Pay.

Trying it first. Whisker offers a 90-day in-home trial with a full refund if you or your cats are not happy. You pay return shipping, and the unit has to come back clean or there is a cleaning fee. It applies to financed purchases too.

How we shop for anything this size. We check Amazon first, because our Amazon Prime Visa card gives us 5% back there. Then we check Rakuten. If Rakuten is offering more cash back at the store selling it, we buy from that store through Rakuten instead. Cash-back rates change often, so check on the day you buy. The Rakuten link is our referral link; we earn a bonus if you sign up through it.

We did not use HSA or FSA funds for ours. We are telling you about the option because it can make the price far easier to manage.

What we would tell someone deciding tonight

If anyone in your house should not be scooping, whether from pain, a weak immune system, pregnancy or anything else, invest in one. It is expensive, and it is the purchase we would tell anyone in that situation to make. Check whether HSA or FSA money can cover it, and use the 90-day trial. Put an air purifier with a carbon filter next to it, keep a plain box as a backup, and choose your litter carefully.

Questions people ask

Will my cats use it? Ours did on day one. Every cat is different.

Does it smell? The drawer is sealed, but it smells briefly each time it cycles. An air purifier next to it solved that for us.

What litter works? Standard-weight clay clumping litter, per Whisker. We started with Whisker’s GreatLitter and now use Fresh Step Multi-Cat unscented, which is a little dusty.

Can I use HSA or FSA money? Through Whisker’s partner Flex, with a Letter of Medical Necessity. It is not guaranteed.

Can I pay monthly? Yes, through Affirm, from 3 to 18 months, at 0% to 36% APR depending on your credit.

How do you clean it? The globe comes out. We hose it down outside and dry it in the sun.

Where we landed

It does the job we bought it for. The litter gets handled every day, whether or not anyone here is able to do it. We are still working on the dust.
