These are the cat products that earned a place in our three-cat desert home. We score each one on people, planet, and value, and we show the trade-offs when they exist. Every link below is an affiliate or referral link, which means we may earn a small commission at no cost to you.
Each pick is scored high, medium, or low on three pillars: people and cats, the planet, and value.

馃挧 Hydration and Cooling
Desert summers make hydration the first priority.
PetSafe Seaside Stainless fountain, 60 oz. Bought August 2026, after a server problem stopped our smart fountain’s pump for a whole day. It is open and stainless, so if a pump stops there is still a bowl of standing water the cats can drink. It cost less than half what our smart fountain did.
People: high 路 Planet: medium 路 Value: high
What we have seen: PetSafe advertise reservoir access during power cuts in their own listing, which is a manufacturer designing for the failure rather than around it.
The trade-off: it does less. No app, no battery, no wireless dock, no server. That is the point. There is less to fail, and nothing about it depends on anyone else having a good day.
What we would tell you is to have two water sources and to make one of them simple, so that whatever stops working, there is still water in a bowl the cat can reach. The full account of how we learned that is in our fountain post.
Coming next: a cooling mat for the hottest afternoons.
馃嵅 Food and Nutrition
Nulo grain-free dry food. A short ingredient list with animal protein first. We feed two of the range rather than one, so the cats get some variety without changing brand.
People: high 路 Planet: medium 路 Value: medium
What we have seen: all three cats ate different varieties of it without any trouble, and they took to the dry food more easily than they took to wet. That is worth saying plainly, because most hydration advice pushes wet food first and our own cats were slower to accept it.
Purina Pro Plan FortiFlora probiotic. A powdered probiotic sachet stirred into food. We used it for a specific reason: a course of antibiotics does not only kill what is making a cat ill. It takes the gut bacteria with it, and those are part of how a cat fights an infection in the first place.
People: high 路 Planet: low 路 Value: medium
What we have seen: given to both boys during their doxycycline course and continued after it finished.
The trade-off: single-use sachets, so it is a small piece of packaging every day. That is the whole of the Planet score.
Coming next: a clean food topper.
馃Υ Treats
Churu lickable treats. Our bonding treat, and the one that holds a cat in place long enough to finish a short session near another cat. A lickable treat takes time to eat, which is the whole point during introductions.
People: high 路 Planet: low 路 Value: high
The trade-off: every tube is a separate plastic sachet. That is why Planet scores low, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.
What we have seen: the use we did not expect is medication. When the boys were on liquid antibiotics we smeared a generous amount of Churu on the floor before dosing, so the moment the syringe came out there was something better waiting. It changes the last thing the cat remembers about the whole business from the medicine to the treat.
Coming next: freeze-dried single-ingredient treats with lighter packaging.
馃幘 Play and Enrichment
Toys, and the awkward truth about which ones won. We run two: an automatic laser unit that moves the dot on a random trajectory and switches itself on when it senses a cat, and an automatic rolling ball. Both are decent products and both still get used. Neither is what our cats actually chose.
People: medium 路 Planet: medium 路 Value: high
What we have seen: the laser frustrated them. A cat hunts in a sequence that ends in a catch, and a laser dot can never be caught, so the sequence never closes. If you use one, end every session by letting the dot settle on a real toy or a treat they can physically get, so the hunt finishes. The rolling ball is better on that count, because it can be pinned, and it covers the times when nobody is free to hold anything.
And what actually won: a sock stuffed with packaging paper, and cardboard boxes. Those are the toys our three come back to. We are on an affiliate page telling you that the best-performing cat toy in our house costs nothing, because that is what happened, and a site that would not tell you this is not worth reading on anything else.

Coming next: a wand toy and a sturdy scratcher.
馃Ч Litter and Cleanup
Purina Tidy Cats Free and Clean Unscented Clumping, Multi Cat. Unscented, regular weight rather than the lightweight formula, and it clumps firmly enough that scooping twice a day is a two minute job rather than a project.
People: high 路 Planet: low 路 Value: high
What we have seen: in daily use since spring 2026. Every scented litter we tried set off sneezing, mine more or less constantly and Whitey鈥檚 for long stretches after he came out of the box. Switching to unscented ended it. This one was low dust and controlled odor from the first bag, with no fragrance doing that work for it.
The trade-off: this is a mainstream clay litter, not a plant-based one. Clay is strip-mined and it is heavy to ship, and that is the whole of the Planet score. We chose what controlled odor in a small desert house with three cats in it, and we would rather name that trade-off than quietly skip it.
LEVOIT Vital 200S-P air purifier. We run two. Its Pet Mode turns the fan up to pull cat hair and dander out of the air faster, and even in Pet Mode we find it quiet. Levoit sizes it for a room up to 388 square feet, cleaning all the air in that room almost five times an hour. The air passes through three filters: a washable first filter that catches hair, a HEPA filter that Levoit says traps 99.97 percent of particles far too small to see, and an activated carbon filter that traps odor, which is why we want one next to the litter boxes. We compost, so we already trust carbon to deal with smell. We bought ours from Macy’s in March 2026.
People: high 路 Planet: low 路 Value: high
Why these scores: People is high because clean air matters most for anyone in the house with breathing problems or a weakened immune system, and it is not something to ignore. Planet is low because the used filters go to landfill every six months. Value is high for what it does every day.
What we have seen: one runs in our bedroom, next to the cat tree where the cats spend most of their active time. The other sits beside the litter boxes, a Litter-Robot and a stainless steel box. We run both on Auto. The moment a cat uses the box and the smell hits, the air quality light on that unit turns red on its own, and the purifier goes to work. There is less dust in both rooms, and more cat hair ends up stuck to the filter than floating across the floor. Whitey sheds the most of our three. We would put one in every room eventually.
The upkeep, and how we keep up with it: we wash the first filter every two weeks, on the same day we deep clean the litter boxes, and wipe it down in between when we clean the room. The main filter gets replaced every six months with Levoit’s own pet filter, on a six-month Subscribe & Save order, so it arrives without us thinking about it. The same days we change the clocks, the HVAC filter and the smoke alarm batteries get done too.
The trade-off: the genuine pet filter is about $57 each on Subscribe & Save, and the purifier uses electricity whenever it runs.

Coming next: low-dust litter, a greywater-safe enzyme cleaner, and our Litter-Robot, which is now in daily use. We are still testing which litter works best in it. We will not score it before then.
馃惥 Multi-Cat Harmony
Feliway MultiCat diffuser. We ran it through the introductions and kept it going afterwards. Box guarding and box avoidance in a multi-cat house are usually about tension between cats rather than about the box, and a diffuser addresses the tension.
People: high 路 Planet: medium 路 Value: medium
The trade-off: it is a refill product, so it is a recurring purchase and recurring packaging. That is why Planet scores medium rather than high.
What we have seen: when the boys arrived, Bandita was distressed for days rather than hours. Her pupils were wide almost constantly, which is the tell we learned to watch for, and she never really settled. Our vet suggested the diffuser. We ran one in a single room and the household calmed down. Our vet also explained why it does nothing to the people in the house: the pheromone is species-specific, so humans have nothing for it to act on.

The caveat we owe you: we were changing several things that week, including separating the cats and starting short supervised sessions. We cannot separate the diffuser from the rest of it, and we are not going to pretend we ran a controlled experiment in our own living room.
馃С Travel and Adventure
Coming next: a carrier and a harness, which is Bandita the Explorer’s department.
馃尶 Sustainable Home, Cat-Safe
This is the lane almost no cat site covers: fragrance-free, greywater-safe, and free of microfiber.
Coming next: an enzyme cleaner, washable non-microfiber cloths, and a microplastic-free litter mat.
