About

A note on our links. Some links on this site are affiliate or referral links. We may earn a small commission at no cost to you. We only recommend what we use for Bandita, Whitey, and Shempy, and we show the trade-offs when they exist.

We are Prema and three rescue cats, Bandita, Whitey, and Shempy, in a desert home in the Coachella Valley. This site exists to help cat parents choose products that are good for their cats, lighter on the planet, and worth the money, without lowering the standard on any of the three.

Three Kittens, One Desert House

We did not plan on three. We planned on one. Rescue had other ideas, and we would not change it. Bandita, Whitey, and Shempy came into our lives one after another and turned a quiet desert home into a full-time, three-cat household.

I am a first-time cat mom and a sustainability professional. That combination shapes everything here. I read labels, I ask a lot of questions, and I do not take “because the package says so” for an answer.

What Practical Purrs Means

Everything we buy for the cats gets checked and tested before it earns a place: grain-free food with short ingredient lists, freeze-dried and lickable treats without fillers, and home products that are fragrance-free and safe for our greywater system. We care about low-waste choices, and we are clear about the trade-offs. When health and the planet pull in different directions, we tell you, and we explain how we chose.

How We Score Every Pick

We rate each product on three things, so the choice is clear at a glance.

Pillar What it measures
People and cats Cat health and safety, ingredient quality, and human safety such as fragrance-free and low-dust
Planet Packaging, waste, sourcing, and greywater safety
Value Price for what you get, durability, and whether it lasts in a three-cat home

Meet the Cast

Two of our rescue cats at home.
Bandita (left) and Shempy.

Bandita, the Explorer. Confident and curious, into everything. First to try the harness and first into any open box.

Whitey, the Cool Cat. Mellow and unbothered, happiest on cool tile or at the water fountain through a desert afternoon.

Shempy, the Goofball. Our playful one, all zoomies and mischief, and the funniest reactions in the house.

Meet Bandita, Whitey, and Shempy, and read more about each one.
